工芸品について

石川県金沢市で生産される仏壇。17世紀から始まったとされ、室町時代に蓮如上人が北陸に浄土真宗を広めたことで信仰需要が高まり、加賀藩主が設けた細工所から優れた工芸技術者が育ったことで産地が確立した。金箔・蒔絵・螺鈿・彫刻・錺金具など加賀の伝統工芸を結集した「工芸の宝庫」として知られ、多職人の分業が生む豪華絢爛な金仏壇は全国に知られる。

Kanazawa Butsudan are Buddhist altars produced in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Nurtured within the rich cultural soil of the Kaga domain—the one-million-koku fief—they are lavishly ornate altars known as a 'treasury of crafts,' combining gold leaf, maki-e lacquer, raden (mother-of-pearl inlay), carving, and metalwork from Kaga's traditional craft traditions. The lacquer techniques of Wajima-nuri and Yamanakas-shikki are fused with the gold leaf application of Kanazawa hakuza, producing a refined interior and intricate exterior renowned throughout Japan. Developed under the patronage of the Maeda clan of the Kaga domain, this production area is a culmination of its craft culture, with many craftspeople still maintaining the tradition of dividing production among specialized artisans.
