飯山仏壇

工芸品について

長野県飯山市で生産される仏壇。江戸時代初期からこの「寺の町飯山」に根づいた仏壇作りは、原材料の調達が容易で製作に適した気候に支えられ産地として発展した。作業が細分化され木地から組立まで地域内で一貫生産する体制を確立。黒漆と金箔、緻密な組子細工・彫刻が特徴で、北信濃の篤い仏教信仰を背景に北陸・信越地方で広く親しまれてきた。

Iiyama Butsudan are Buddhist altars produced in Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture. Nurtured within the agricultural culture of northern Shinano (Shinshu) where Jodo Shinshu Buddhism is devoutly practiced, this altar production area has a history of craftspeople making altars and Buddhist implements during the snow-bound winter off-season. Characterized by black lacquered surfaces, gold leaf, intricate kumiko woodwork, and carving, these dignified altars have long been cherished in the Hokuriku and Shin'etsu regions. The abundant timber resources of Iiyama and the culture of winter handiwork form the foundation of this industry, and the sincere craftsmanship rooted in rural Buddhist faith continues to be passed down at this Shin'etsu altar production area.
