山形県山形市を中心に生産される金仏壇。江戸中期から発展し、山形県産の欅材を用いた堅牢な木地加工と、金箔・漆・蒔絵を施した豪華な仕上げが特徴。東北地方では浄土真宗が広く信仰されており、山形仏壇はその信仰需要に応える東北を代表する金仏壇産地として知られる。山形の豊富な木材資源と職人技術が融合した東北の伝統工芸品。
Yamagata Butsudan are gold Buddhist altars produced mainly in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. Developed from the mid-Edo period, they are characterized by robust wood processing using Yamagata Prefecture-grown zelkova, finished with gold leaf, lacquer, and maki-e decoration. Jodo Shinshu Buddhism is widely practiced in the Tohoku region, and Yamagata altars are known as a representative gold altar production area in Tohoku meeting that religious demand. A Tohoku traditional craft fusing Yamagata's abundant timber resources with craftsman technique.
