About Hakata Ningyo (Hakata Doll)
Hakata Ningyo are unglazed clay dolls produced in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Said to have started in the early Edo period, they feature the technique of painting unglazed white clay dolls with Japanese painting pigments. Covering diverse subjects including beautiful women, children, animals, and Noh performances, they are characterized by vivid colors and lively expressions. Popular overseas as export crafts since the Meiji period, the title 'Hakata doll artist' is a representative traditional craftsperson designation.
