工芸品について

岐阜県岐阜市で生産される長良川和紙と竹を使った伝統的な提灯。江戸時代中期頃から岐阜の豊富な竹・和紙を活かした提灯制作が始まり、盆提灯の主要産地として発展した。細い竹ひごを螺旋状に巻いた骨組みに薄い美濃和紙を貼り、絵師が草花・風景・家紋などを描き入れる。和紙を通した柔らかく幻想的な灯りは日本の夏の風物詩で、岐阜は国内盆提灯生産の主要産地として全国に出荷している。

Gifu Chochin are traditional lanterns produced in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, using Nagara River washi paper and bamboo. Around the mid-Edo period, lantern production began utilizing Gifu's abundant bamboo and washi paper, developing into a major production area for Obon lanterns. Thin bamboo strips are wound in a spiral frame, covered with thin Mino washi paper, onto which painters add flowers, landscapes, and family crests. The soft, fantastical light through the washi paper is a summer seasonal feature in Japan, and Gifu ships nationwide as a major domestic producer of Obon lanterns.
