広島県安芸郡熊野町で生産される毛筆・化粧筆。江戸時代、農業だけでは生活が難しかった農民が紀州熊野・大和吉野方面へ出稼ぎし、帰路に筆を仕入れて行商したのが縁の始まり。江戸時代後期に広島藩の御用筆司から筆作りを習得した村人が帰郷して技術を広め、産地が形成された。現在は国内の毛筆・化粧筆生産の約80%を占める日本最大の筆産地で、世界の化粧品ブランドからも高く評価される穂作りの技術が受け継がれている。
Kumano Fude are calligraphy brushes and makeup brushes produced in Kumano Town, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture. Around the Tenpo era (1830-44) at the end of the Edo period, farmers began itinerant brush selling as a side business, acquiring techniques from Nara and Arima to form the production area. Currently the largest brush production area in Japan, accounting for approximately 80% of domestic production of calligraphy brushes, Western brushes, and makeup brushes. The high-quality hair selection and tassel-making techniques are highly regarded by cosmetics brands worldwide, with exports to Europe and China.
