南部紫根染

工芸品について

岩手県南部地方に伝わる紫根（シコン：ムラサキ草の根）を使った天然染色で、南部藩が保護した伝統的な草木染め技術。ムラサキ草の根から抽出した紫色で絹・木綿を染め、渋みのある深い紫色と植物由来の柔らかな発色が特徴の高度な草木染め技法。媒染剤の調合や染め回数によって紫の濃淡を繊細にコントロールするには長年の経験が必要で、化学染料では再現できない天然の奥深い色調が愛好家に珍重される。現在も盛岡市・雫石町周辺の職人が伝統の染色技術を守り続けている。

Nanbu shikone is natural dyeing using shikon (the root of the murasaki plant, Lithospermum erythrorhizon) passed down in the Nanbu region of Iwate Prefecture, a traditional plant dyeing technique protected by the Nanbu domain. Silk and cotton are dyed in the purple color extracted from murasaki plant roots, characterized by a subdued deep purple and soft natural coloring derived from plant matter. Years of experience are required to delicately control the intensity of purple through mordant blending and number of dyeing cycles, and the deep natural hue that cannot be reproduced with chemical dyes is prized by enthusiasts. Craftspeople around Morioka City and Shizukuishi-cho continue to preserve the traditional dyeing technique today.
