工芸品について
鹿児島県で生産される陶磁器。文禄・慶長の役で島津氏が連れ帰った朝鮮陶工たちによって始まり、400年以上の歴史を持つ。堅野系・龍門司系・苗代川系という異なる作風が生まれ、白薩摩（金彩色絵の豪華な磁器）と黒薩摩（鉄釉の素朴な陶器）が並立する。1867年のパリ万博でヨーロッパを席巻し、「Satsuma ware」として世界的な評価を確立した。
Satsuma ware is ceramics produced in Kagoshima Prefecture. Said to have begun around 1600 when Korean potters brought back by Shimazu Yoshihiro during the Korean campaigns. There are two lineages: Shiro-Satsuma (white porcelain with gold painting and colored decoration) and Kuro-Satsuma (iron-rich black and amber earthenware). White Satsuma was exported to Europe and America in the Meiji era, gaining worldwide recognition as 'Satsuma ware.'
