工芸品について

京都で制作される掛け軸・屏風・襖・巻物などの表具（表装）工芸。平安時代から宮廷・寺院の絵画・書を保護・展示するための表装技術として発展し、薄美濃紙・金箔・錦裂などの高級素材を組み合わせた格調ある仕立てが特徴。文化財保存の要でもある京表具師の技術は国内外の美術品修復にも活用される。古都京都の文化的土壌で磨かれた表具の美は、和の精神と職人技の粋を体現する工芸として現代も高い評価を受ける。

Kyo Hyogu is the craft of mounting and framing—hanging scrolls, folding screens, sliding doors, and scrolls—produced in Kyoto. Developed from the Heian period as a technique for protecting and displaying paintings and calligraphy for the imperial court and temples, it features dignified finishing combining premium materials such as thin Mino paper, gold leaf, and brocade. The skills of Kyoto mounting craftspeople, also essential for cultural property conservation, are applied to art restoration domestically and internationally. The beauty of mounting refined in the cultural soil of ancient Kyoto continues to receive high acclaim today as a craft embodying the spirit of Japanese aesthetics and the pinnacle of craftsmen's skills.
