Kyo shishuu is high-level hand embroidery using silk, gold, and silver threads produced in Kyoto, a dignified embroidery craft that has been applied to court costumes, shrine and temple hangings, and uchikake since the Heian period. Making full use of diverse embroidery techniques including sagara embroidery, wari-nui, and suge-nui, it is used for a wide range of items from kimono and obi to interior decoration. As the pinnacle of embroidery nurtured by over a thousand years of Kyoto's imperial court culture and Buddhist culture, craftspeople in Kyoto City continue to pass down advanced techniques today, producing the highest quality embroidery works.
