和蝋燭

工芸品について

植物性の木蝋（もくろう）を原料とした日本伝統のろうそく。ハゼの実・ウルシの実などから採取した木蝋を、い草・和紙で作った芯（しん）に何度も重ねて塗り固めて作る。炎が大きく揺らぎ、すすが少なく、燃焼時間が長いという特性がある。仏事・神事・茶道の場で欠かせない日本独自のろうそく文化として発展し、京都・愛知（一色）・滋賀・富山などが主要産地として知られる。

Wa Rosoku are traditional Japanese candles made from plant-based wood wax (mokuro). Made by repeatedly coating an inner core of rush grass and Japanese paper with wood wax extracted from the fruits of hazenoki and urushi trees. They have characteristics of a large flickering flame, little soot, and long burning time. Developed as a uniquely Japanese candle culture indispensable for Buddhist ceremonies, Shinto rituals, and tea ceremony, with Kyoto, Aichi (Isshiki), Shiga, and Toyama known as major production areas.
