奈良県奈良市・大和郡山市を中心に生産される書道用の墨。明日香の地に起源を持ち、都が京都に移ってからも奈良には多くの社寺が残ったため、写経や学問に必要な墨の工房が奈良に根付いた。興福寺二諦坊の燈明の煤から作られた油煙墨が「奈良墨」として名声を得て以来、松煙墨・油煙墨の両製法が受け継がれ、現在は全国の墨生産量の約90%を奈良が占める。

Nara Sumi are ink sticks for calligraphy produced mainly in Nara City and Yamatokoriyama City, Nara Prefecture. Since the ink-making technique was introduced from China in the Nara period, it developed alongside the manuscript culture of temples such as Kofukuji and Todaiji, with Nara now accounting for approximately 90% of domestic ink production. Made by the traditional method of adding glue (nikawa) to soot obtained by burning pine or oil and kneading it solid, pine-smoke ink and oil-smoke ink each have distinct expressive properties. The highest quality pieces develop an even deeper tone through aging for decades.
