大津張子

工芸品について

滋賀県大津市に伝わる張子細工の郷土工芸品。江戸時代に東海道・中山道の分岐点として栄えた大津宿の名産品として生まれ、旅人のみやげ物として広まった。和紙を何層にも重ねて成形し、乾燥後に彩色する張子技法による人形・玩具・置物が特徴で、虎・達磨・ひょっとこなどの縁起物が代表的。素朴でユーモラスな表情と鮮やかな彩色が愛され、滋賀・近江の民衆文化を伝える郷土色豊かな張子工芸品として現代も職人に受け継がれている。

Otsu Hariko is a papier-mâché folk craft passed down in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Born as a specialty product of Otsu-juku, which flourished as the junction of the Tokaido and Nakasendo highways in the Edo period, it spread as souvenirs for travelers. Characterized by dolls, toys, and ornaments made by layering washi paper and painting after drying, with tigers, daruma, and hyottoko (funny faces) as representative lucky charm subjects. Beloved for their rustic, humorous expressions and vivid coloring, these papier-mâché crafts continue to be passed down by craftspeople as folk art rich in Shiga and Omi regional culture.
