雲州そろばん

工芸品について

島根県仁多郡奥出雲町（旧仁多町・横田町）で生産される木製そろばん。江戸時代後期、仁多町の大工が広島の職人のそろばんを手本に、地元のカシ・ウメ・ススタケを使って作り始めたのが起源。横田町の職人が珠を削る手回しろくろを完成させたことで生産が急増し、「そろばんといえば雲州」と全国に知られる産地となった。現在は国内のそろばん生産の約70%を占める日本最大の産地で、精密な手作りの技術が今も受け継がれている。

Unshu Soroban are wooden abacuses produced in Okuizumo Town, Nita District, Shimane Prefecture. Around the mid-Edo period, production began as a side business for farmers, developing into a production area utilizing the characteristics of the mountain region's abundant quality wood and bamboo. Currently the largest abacus production area in Japan, accounting for approximately 70% of domestic production, with the precise handcrafting method of finishing all wooden frames, beams, and beads by hand still being maintained. Even in modern times with widespread ICT education, there is continued strong demand as a tool for mental arithmetic and mathematics education, with high regard as a traditional craft.
