徳島県の伝統芸能「阿波人形浄瑠璃」で使用される工芸的人形。江戸時代初期頃から徳島（阿波）の農村に人形浄瑠璃が根付き、大坂の文楽の影響を受けながら独自の阿波スタイルが発展した。人形は主遣い（あるいは三人遣い）が胴体・首・手足を動かす精巧な構造を持ち、表情豊かな彫刻の首・精巧に刺繍された衣装・精密な手足の仕掛けが人形師の技術の粋を示す。現在も農村歌舞伎・お盆祭りの場で上演が続く徳島の誇る伝統芸能の象徴的工芸品。
Awa Ningyo Joruri Puppets are craft puppets used in 'Awa Ningyo Joruri,' a traditional performing art of Tokushima Prefecture. From the early Edo period, ningyo joruri (puppet theater) took root in the farming villages of Tokushima (Awa), developing a unique Awa style influenced by Osaka's Bunraku. The puppets have sophisticated structures operated by the main puppeteer (or three puppeteers) moving the torso, head, and limbs, with expressively carved heads, intricately embroidered costumes, and precision-engineered limb mechanisms showcasing the pinnacle of puppet-maker craftsmanship. Still performed at rural kabuki and Obon festivals, they are iconic craft objects of Tokushima's proud traditional performing arts.
