工芸品について

主に東京都台東区（浅草・上野周辺）で生産されるタイマイの甲羅を使った装飾工芸品。江戸時代から関東地方で盛んに和装品が作られ、タイマイ甲羅独自の張り合わせ技術で発展してきた。加熱軟化させた甲羅を型に押し当てて成形・接合する技法が特徴で、かんざし・帯留め・眼鏡フレームなどが代表的な製品。現在はワシントン条約による素材規制で職人数・生産量ともに減少しているが、既存素材での制作と代替素材の開発が続けられている。

Bekko Zaiku is decorative crafts made from hawksbill sea turtle shell, produced mainly in Taito Ward (around Asakusa and Ueno), Tokyo. Techniques transmitted from Nagasaki around the mid-Edo period developed in Edo/Tokyo, with hair ornaments (kanzashi), brooches, eyeglass frames, and obi clasps as representative products. The distinctive technique involves heating the hawksbill shell in hot water or flame to soften it, then pressing it into molds for shaping and joining. Currently the number of craftspeople and production volume are declining due to difficulty sourcing materials under CITES (Washington Convention) commercial trade restrictions, though production with existing materials and development of alternative materials continue.
