東京都台東区・荒川区を中心に伝わる絹糸による手刺繍で、江戸時代から歌舞伎・能の衣装や着物・帯の装飾として発展してきた。金糸・銀糸・色糸を駆使した絢爛豪華な刺繍が特徴で、着物・帯・のれんなど幅広い和装品に施される装飾手工芸。染色品カテゴリに属し、刺繍という手法で布地に豊かな表情を与える東京の伝統工芸として、現在も台東区・荒川区の職人が高度な手技を継承している。

Edo shishuu is hand embroidery using silk thread passed down in the Taito and Arakawa districts of Tokyo, developed from the Edo period as decoration for kabuki and noh costumes, kimono, and obi. Characterized by lavishly gorgeous embroidery making full use of gold, silver, and colored threads, it is a decorative handcraft applied to a wide range of Japanese clothing items including kimono, obi, and noren curtains. Belonging to the dyeing category, it is a Tokyo traditional craft that gives rich expression to fabric through the technique of embroidery, with craftspeople in Taito and Arakawa continuing to pass down advanced hand skills today.
