About Nagoya Sekku Kazari (Nagoya Festival Dolls)
Nagoya Sekku Kazari is the collective name for hina (girl's day) and samurai festival dolls produced mainly in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. As a doll-making area with roots in the Edo period, it inherited influences from Kyoto dolls while establishing a distinct 'Nagoya style' known for opulence and refinement. Characterized by intricately crafted paulownia-paste or wood-carved heads and lavish costumes with gold-thread silk embroidery, these dolls embody the aesthetic sensibility cultivated in the castle town of the Owari Tokugawa domain. Today it remains one of Japan's largest doll-producing areas with a high market share.
