About Sendai Hariko (Sendai Papier-Mâché)

Sendai Hariko are papier-mâché folk toys made in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Created by layering washi paper over bamboo or wood core molds, then removing the mold after drying and painting. Many depict auspicious subjects such as daruma, tigers, horses, and beckoning cats, conveying the folk craft charm of Sendai with vivid colors and rustic expressions. Long cherished as New Year and festival souvenirs in the Tohoku region, a small number of craftspeople continue production today.
