About Beppu Bamboo Craft
Beppu bamboo craft is produced in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. Said to have begun in the Nara period, Beppu is known as Japan's largest bamboo craft production area. With diverse weaving techniques including mutsume-ami (six-eye weave) and gozame-ami (mat weave), it produces a wide range from baskets and flower vases to furniture and lighting. Its artistic value is also high, having produced Living National Treasures. The abundant madake bamboo of Oita and Beppu supports high-quality bamboo crafts.
