About Suruga Take Chikusen Bamboo Craft
Suruga Take Chikusen is bamboo crafts produced in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Characterized by a technique of combining hundreds to thousands of bamboo strips (higo) to create vessels, baskets, and flower vases. The Suruga region (modern Shizuoka) was favored by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and developed from the Edo period as a souvenir along the Tokaido highway. Delicate and intricate pieces woven from thin bamboo strips are also popular as modern lighting and interior design.
