About Edo Sekku Ningyo (Edo Seasonal Festival Dolls)
Edo Sekku Ningyo is the collective term for hina dolls and samurai dolls produced mainly in Taito and Sumida Wards, Tokyo. From the mid-Edo period, Tokyo—where craftsmen including doll makers, costume specialists, and prop makers were concentrated—developed as a major production area for seasonal festival dolls. Encompassing diverse techniques including paulownia clay, kimekomi, and costumed dolls, they are characterized by the style and splendor cultivated by Edo's aesthetic sensibility.
