About Joboji-nuri (Joboji Lacquerware)
Joboji-nuri is lacquerware produced in Joboji Town, Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture. Joboji is known as 'Japan's leading lacquer production area,' accounting for approximately 60% of domestic lacquer production, and lacquerware made using the pure domestic lacquer harvested there is called Joboji-nuri. Characterized by a robust and rustic finish achieved by carefully layering lacquer on bare wood, it embodies the functional beauty of authentic lacquerware that can be repaired and re-lacquered. Joboji lacquer, also used for cultural property restoration, supports the foundation of Japan's lacquer culture.
