About Odawara Shikki (Odawara Lacquerware)
Odawara Shikki is lacquerware produced in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Said to have begun in the Muromachi period, it excels in wood processing techniques utilizing the abundant timber of the Hakone mountain range. Known as a specialty product of Odawara post-town on the Tokaido highway during the Edo period, it spread nationwide as souvenirs for travelers. 'Kijiro-nuri'—transparent lacquer application that reveals the wood grain—using diverse woods such as zelkova and Japanese horse chestnut is synonymous with Odawara lacquerware. Still highly regarded as robust and practical lacquerware.
