About Kamo Ningyo (Kamo Doll)
Kamo Ningyo are wooden dolls begun by parishioners of Kamigamo Shrine in Kita Ward, Kyoto City. Characterized by the technique of carving animals and human figures from wood, taking advantage of natural grain and knots, many are finished as natural wood (shiraki) to emphasize the material's texture. Linked to the religious rituals and Aoi Matsuri festival of Kamigamo Shrine, these dolls embody Kyoto's craft culture with rustic yet refined forms.
