About Edo Sensu
Edo Sensu are folding fans produced in Tokyo (Edo). Fan-making techniques transmitted from Kyoto merged with the 'iki' (stylish refinement) aesthetics of Edo to establish a unique style. While Kyo Sensu is made through the division of labor among many craftspeople, Edo Sensu is traditionally characterized by 'Edo's solo work'—a single craftsperson handling all processes. Featuring fewer ribs and often simple, bold designs, it developed closely intertwined with the popular culture of Edo through rakugo performers and entertainers.
