About Satsuma Kiriko
Satsuma Kiriko is a cut colored glass craft produced in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Production began around 1846 when Satsuma Domain lords Shimazu Narioki and Nariakira introduced Western glass technology. Its defining feature is the unique color gradation called 'bokashi' created by thickly applying colored glass over clear glass and then deep-cutting. After disappearing following the Meiji Restoration, the technique was revived by modern craftspeople in the Showa period. Together with Edo Kiriko, it is internationally recognized as one of Japan's 'Two Great Kiriko' glass arts.
