About Negoro-nuri (Negoro Lacquerware)
Negoro-nuri is lacquerware originating in the old Negoro region of Wakayama Prefecture (around present-day Iwade City). Said to have been made by monks of Negoroji Temple as everyday utensils, characterized by two-layer lacquering with black lacquer as the base and vermilion lacquer on top. Known as one of Japan's oldest lacquerware styles, the 'scenery of Negoro-nuri' where the upper vermilion wears away with use to reveal the black beneath is highly valued by modern craft enthusiasts for its wabi-sabi aesthetic. Today the Negoro-nuri technique is passed down in various regions including Wakayama and Nara.
