About Ouchi Lacquerware
Ouchi lacquerware is produced in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is said to have developed during the Muromachi period as the Ouchi clan, who controlled western Japan, actively adopted continental culture. Characterized by vermilion and black backgrounds with the Ouchi clan's 'Ouchi-bishi' family crest and peony and flower motifs painted in gold. Representative items include trays, bowls, and small containers.
