約1,300年前、宮中に仕える白滝姫が機織りの技を桐生の村人に伝えたのが始まりとされる群馬県桐生市の絹織物。関ヶ原の戦いで徳川家康が桐生の白絹の旗を用いたことでその名が全国に広まり、幕府の保護のもとで金襴緞子などの高級織物産地へと発展した。「西の西陣、東の桐生」と称される東日本最大の絹産地で、帯・着物地から洋装素材まで多彩に生産する。
Kiryu ori is a silk textile produced in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. Records of silk being presented to the Imperial court date to the Nara period, earning it the description "Nishijin of the West, Kiryu of the East" as the largest silk textile production area in eastern Japan. It produces diverse products including obi, kimono fabric, and shawls, and in recent years has incorporated advanced materials such as polyester while preserving traditional patterns and techniques.
