兵庫県丹波市青垣町で生産される木綿・麻・絹の縞織物で、江戸時代後期から農家の女性が手機で織り続けてきた生活の布。藍染めを中心とした素朴な縞模様と、手紡ぎ・草木染めによる自然な風合いが丹波布の魅力で、民藝運動の父・柳宗悦が「日本一の民芸織物」と賞賛した逸品として知られる。現代でも丹波布の産地として青垣町の工房が手機による伝統織りを守り、民藝の精神を受け継いだ素朴で美しい布を作り続けている。
Tanba nuno is a striped textile of cotton, hemp, and silk produced in Aogaki-cho, Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture, a cloth of daily life woven by farming women on hand looms from the late Edo period. The appeal of Tanba nuno lies in its simple stripe patterns centered on indigo dyeing and a natural texture from hand spinning and plant dyeing; it is known as a masterpiece praised by Soetsu Yanagi, father of the mingei (folk craft) movement, as 'Japan's finest folk craft textile.' Even today, workshops in Aogaki-cho continue to maintain traditional hand loom weaving, creating plain and beautiful cloth inheriting the spirit of mingei.
