南部裂織

工芸品について

岩手県南部地方に伝わる裂き織り（さきおり）で、着古した布を細く裂いて緯糸に使い、地糸と組み合わせて織る「もの再生」の織物文化。江戸後期から東北の農村女性の手仕事として発展し、廃布を活かす慈しみの精神と素朴で力強いテキスタイルが特徴。南部藩の質実剛健な気風が育んだ再生利用の美学は、現代のサステナビリティの観点からも高く評価される。現在も盛岡市を中心に工房や保存会が技術を継承している。

Nanbu sakiori is a rag weaving tradition passed down in the Nanbu region of Iwate Prefecture, a 'material rebirth' textile culture where old cloth is torn into thin strips and used as weft threads combined with base yarn. Developed as handwork by rural women of Tohoku from the late Edo period, it is characterized by a spirit of cherishing worn-out cloth and a rustic, powerful textile quality. The aesthetic of recycling nurtured by the Nanbu domain's spirit of simplicity and fortitude is highly regarded today from a sustainability perspective. Workshops and preservation societies centered in Morioka City continue to pass down the technique.
