肥後象嵌

工芸品について

熊本県熊本市で生産される金属象嵌工芸品。寛永9年（1632年）、肥後藩主・細川忠利侯に仕えた林又七が鉄砲や刀の鐔（つば）に象嵌を施したのが始まりとされる。江戸時代には林家をはじめ複数の家が肥後鐔の名品を生み出し、廃刀令以降は装身具・装飾品へと転じた。鉄地に金・銀線を打ち込む「布目象嵌」技法による、黒い鉄地に輝く金銀の対比が独特の美しさを生み出す。

Higo zogan is metal inlay craft produced in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. In the early Edo period, craftspeople serving the Higo Hosokawa Domain established inlay techniques of embedding gold and silver into iron bases, applied to armor, accessories, and tea ceremony utensils. The characteristic technique is "nunome zogan" (cloth-ground inlay), cutting grooves into the iron base with fine chisels and driving in gold and silver wire. The contrast between the gleaming gold and silver against the black iron creates a uniquely beautiful aesthetic.
