人吉球磨紬

熊本県人吉・球磨地方で生産される絹の手織り紬で、球磨川流域の盆地で育まれた養蚕文化から生まれた。独特の泥染め・草木染めによる渋い色調と手紡ぎ糸の素朴な風合いが特徴で、大島紬・本場結城紬と並ぶ高級紬として全国に知られる。球磨盆地の豊かな自然環境がもたらす清らかな水と気候が、上質な絹糸の生産と精緻な手織り技術を支えてきた。現在も人吉・球磨地方の工房が一反一反丁寧に手織りを続けている。

Hitoyoshi Kuma tsumugi is a hand-woven silk tsumugi produced in the Hitoyoshi and Kuma regions of Kumamoto Prefecture, born from the sericulture culture nurtured in the basin along the Kuma River. Characterized by a subdued coloring from distinctive mud dyeing and plant dyeing, and a rustic texture from hand-spun thread, it is nationally known as a premium tsumugi alongside Oshima tsumugi and Honba Yuki tsumugi. The pure water and climate provided by the rich natural environment of the Kuma Basin have supported high-quality silk thread production and intricate hand-weaving techniques. Workshops in the Hitoyoshi and Kuma region continue to hand-weave each bolt with care today.
