村上木彫堆朱

新潟県村上市で生産される木彫り漆器。15世紀初め、京都の漆器職人が中国の堆朱を真似て木彫りの上に漆を塗る技法を始め、村上地方の寺院建立の際にその技術が伝えられたのが起源とされる。江戸時代には武士から町民へと広まった。桐などの木地に直接彫刻を施して朱・黒漆を塗る村上独自の「木彫り堆朱」様式で、牡丹・菊などの優美な文様と深みある漆色が特徴。

Murakami Kibori Taishu is a type of wood-carved lacquerware produced in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, independently developing the Chinese-origin 'taishu' (carved lacquer) technique during the Edo period. While traditional taishu involves carving into layers of built-up lacquer, Murakami's style carves intricate patterns directly into a wood base (such as paulownia) before finishing with red or black lacquer, establishing a unique local style. Characterized by elegant motifs of peonies, chrysanthemums, and pine-bamboo-plum along with deep lacquer hues, it is a Niigata tradition nurtured by the samurai culture of the Murakami domain.
