川越唐桟

工芸品について

埼玉県川越市で生産される絹と木綿の交織縞織物で、江戸時代後期に川越藩が奨励したことに始まる。縦糸に絹、横糸に木綿を使う交織（こうおり）により、絹の光沢と木綿の丈夫さを巧みに兼ね備えた実用的な縞織物に仕上がる。「唐桟留（とうざんとめ）」とも呼ばれ、江戸の粋な商人・職人に広く愛された独特の縞模様が特徴。現在も川越の工房が伝統技法を守り、帯地・着物地として生産を続けている。

Kawagoe tozan is a striped textile using an interwoven combination of silk and cotton, produced in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, originating from promotion by the Kawagoe domain in the late Edo period. Silk is used for the warp and cotton for the weft, skillfully combining the luster of silk with the durability of cotton into a practical striped textile. Also called 'Tozan-dome,' it is characterized by distinctive stripe patterns beloved by fashionable Edo merchants and artisans. Workshops in Kawagoe continue to preserve traditional techniques today, producing obi and kimono fabric.
