17世紀後半に鳥取県西部の弓ヶ浜地方で自家用綿の栽培が始まり、18世紀中頃には藍玉問屋が設けられて木綿の生産が増加した産地。19世紀初めに米子・弓ヶ浜で農家の女性たちが「浜の目絣」と呼ばれる絵絣を手機で織り始めたのが弓浜絣の起こりとされる。藍染めと素朴な手績み糸が生む力強い絣文様が特徴で、山陰地方を代表する伝統的木綿絣産地として知られる。
Yumihama gasuri is a cotton kasuri (ikat) textile produced in the Yumihama Peninsula (Sakaiminato City and Yonago City) in western Tottori Prefecture, woven on hand looms by farming women from the mid-Edo period. Characterized by rustic kasuri patterns from coarsely hand-spun thread and indigo dyeing, it is known as the representative traditional cotton kasuri production area of the San'in region. A cloth born from the rural culture of the Yumihama Peninsula nurtured in the harsh climate of the Sea of Japan, its rustic yet powerful kasuri patterns have an appeal that draws viewers. Workshops in Sakaiminato City and Yonago City continue to preserve traditional techniques and produce kimono and obi fabric today.
