About Mikawa Butsudan (Mikawa Buddhist Altar)
Mikawa Butsudan are Buddhist altars produced mainly in Okazaki City, Anjo City, and Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture. Developed in the western Mikawa region from the mid-Edo period, spreading alongside the prevalence of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in the Mikawa area. An altar production area in Aichi alongside Nagoya altars, producing high-quality altars through a division of labor in wood processing, lacquering, gold leaf, and decorative metal fittings.
