About Hiroshima Butsudan (Hiroshima Buddhist Altar)
Hiroshima Butsudan are Buddhist altars produced mainly in Hiroshima City and Fuchu City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Developed from the mid-Edo period, it is known as a western Japan altar production area. Both gold altars and karaki altars (black/brown-toned altars using exotic hardwood) are produced. Characterized by high-quality woodworking in cooperation with Fuchu City's furniture industry, it developed alongside the spread of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in the region.
