About Nagoya Butsudan (Nagoya Buddhist Altar)
Nagoya Butsudan are Buddhist altars produced mainly in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. Said to have started in the early Edo period, solid keyaki (Japanese zelkova) woodwork is decorated with gold leaf, lacquer, and maki-e. Characterized by robust construction and luxurious decoration born from Owari Nagoya's craftsman culture. Many altar makers and craftsmen are still concentrated in Nagoya City, with products widely distributed mainly in the Tokai region.
