About Akita Sugi Oke Daru (Akita Cedar Tub and Barrel)
Akita Sugi Oke Daru are tubs and barrels made from Akita cedar, produced mainly in Odate City, Akita Prefecture. In Odate, the production area of Akita cedar, barrel craftspeople have been active since the Edo period, producing a wide range from large wooden barrels for sake brewing, soy sauce, and miso fermentation, to everyday hand buckets. Akita cedar with its fine grain rings is highly durable against moisture, and has long been cherished as practical wooden craft deeply rooted in daily life, including pickling tubs, bathtubs, and rice cookers (ohitsu). This is a craft that fuses functional beauty and tradition, born from Akita's abundant cedar resources and the precise bamboo/wire hoop-binding techniques of barrel craftspeople.
