About Echizen Ware

Echizen ware is produced in Echizen Town, Fukui Prefecture, and is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. Beginning in the late Heian period, it has approximately 900 years of history. The basic technique is "unglazed stoneware" fired in wood kilns, where natural ash glazes and scorching create unique surfaces on the vessels. It centers on practical forms such as jars, crocks, and mortars.
