About Ohori Soma Ware

Ohori Soma ware originated in Ohori district, Namie Town, Futaba-gun, Fukushima Prefecture. Said to have started around 1690 with encouragement from the Soma domain. Its three defining features are: 'Niijuyaki' (double-walled structure), horse paintings (hashiri-koma), and 'Ao-hibi' (blue crackle glaze). After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear accident forced evacuation, the production area faced near-extinction, but revival efforts continue at relocation sites.
