About Hida Shunkei Lacquerware

Hida Shunkei is lacquerware produced in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Said to have started around 1600 during the era of Takayama castle lord Kanamori Nagachika. Characterized by 'Shunkei-nuri' technique of layering transparent lacquer to highlight the wood grain, it has a unique beauty where natural yellow, orange, and brown wood grain shows through. Widely known as a Takayama tourist craft.
