About Kiso Lacquerware
Kiso lacquerware is produced in the Narakawa district of Shiojiri City, Nagano Prefecture. It developed during the Edo period when sold to travelers along the Nakasendo road at post towns like Narai and Miyanokosu. Unique techniques include 'Katamichi-urushi' (one-way lacquer for durability) and 'Sabie' (rust painting using tin powder). Modern Kiso lacquerware cutlery and soup bowls for Western-style dining are also popular.
