About Onta Ware
Onta ware is pottery produced in Sarayama district, Hita City, Oita Prefecture. Established around 1705 when potter Yanase Mitsaemon from Koishiwara ware was invited to open a kiln. Its unique decorative techniques (tobikanna, hakeme, etc.) and rustic beauty with straw ash glaze are internationally recognized. Praised by Yanagi Soetsu and Bernard Leach of the Folk Craft Movement, only 10 kilns produce it, with each family handling the entire process without division of labor.
