About Ryukyu Bingata
Ryukyu Bingata is stencil-dyed fabric produced mainly in the Shuri district of Naha City, Okinawa. 'Bingata' comes from 'beni-gata' (crimson pattern), featuring vivid colors (crimson, blue, yellow, green, black) and patterns of tropical plants, animals, and auspicious motifs applied with stencils. Developed as ceremonial court attire for the Ryukyu Kingdom, it established a unique style fusing Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian dyeing techniques. Still widely cherished as traditional Okinawan dress and tourist fashion.
