About Shigaraki Ware
Shigaraki ware is pottery from Shigaraki-cho, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture—one of Japan's oldest pottery-producing areas, with origins traced to 742 CE. The beauty of natural ash glaze, scorching, and ash fall created by kiln flames is its hallmark. Also world-famous for tanuki (raccoon dog) figurines. Designated a national traditional craft in 2013.
