About Suruga Hinagu
Suruga Hinagu are small accessories and furnishings for hinaningyo (traditional dolls for Girls' Day) produced in Shizuoka City (formerly Suruga Province), Shizuoka Prefecture. At the beginning of the Edo period, when Tokugawa Ieyasu built Sunpu Castle, craftspeople gathered from across Japan and diverse craft techniques took root in Shizuoka, forming the foundation of the production area. Characterized by the intricate lacquerwork, bamboo crafts, embroidery, and metal fittings on the miniature furnishings for the hinaningyo display (shrine cabinets, palanquins, chests of drawers, large trunks, dressing tables, etc.), it is known as a production area for accessories and furnishings rather than the dolls themselves. Still shipping to the national hinaningyo market as a major production area for doll accessories.
