About Otani Ware

Otani ware is produced in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture. Beginning around 1780, it is characterized by a unique technique called "nerokkuro" (lying-down wheel) used to make large vessels. Two potters work together, with one lying down to turn the wheel while the other shapes the clay, producing large urns and jars used in indigo dyeing. Today it is preserved as a traditional industry of Tokushima.
